Syringa

This is my third completed piece for Senior Project. It is a cast bronze neck piece with a kiss-lock clasp in the front. There are scattered sterling silver cast lilac flowers attached to the pieces.

The title of the piece, Syringa, comes from the genus name for the lilac plant.

My collection focuses on capturing memories of my grandmother’s garden and incorporates floral elements and scroll-work designs through the use of traditional metalsmithing techniques.

Objet USB

This is a rendering for a completed project for my digital object design 2 class. Using Rhino, I created a housing for a flash drive. I had it printed in objet, a smooth plastic material. The final product will have a cord threaded through it to put on my keys, because I have a tendency to loose flash drives very quickly if they are not attached to something important.

Woodmere Art Museum Trip

Over spring break I went to the Woodmere Art Museum in Philly for a special exhibition. It was called Forces of Nature and feature two separate shows, both of which consisted of artists inspired by nature. There was also an underlying abstract quality in all of the work.

The first show was called Elaine Kurtz: A Retrospective and showed work done by Kurtz throughout her life. She was known for being interested in color and perception, so a lot of her work dealt with vertical and horizontal lines that faded from one color to another. She also had a series in which she incorporated sand and gravel into the paint so that it would glimmer in the light.

ACC Show

This weekend I went to the American Craft Council show in Baltimore. It is a show where artists and makers from around the country, all who work in different mediums, set up booths to exhibit and sell their work. As a metalsmith I am drawn to the handmade jewelry at the show, and there is a lot of it. I spent the morning walking around the convention center admiring the metalwork and collecting business cards of the work that I really loved. Here are my cards, as well as the show program and free issues of Metalsmith, American Craft and Ornament that I picked up.

3-D Printed Herb Garden

This is a piece that I just completed for digital object design 2 in Rhino. It is a 3-D modeled object used for growing and storing basil in three forms: seeds, fresh and dried. I made this because I wanted fresh herbs to be more accessible in the kitchen. the form is based off test tubes in a holder. It will be printed in Z corp (a plaster material) and I will insert a magnet in the back so it can hang on the fridge. I will also use corks to cap off the seeds and dried basil.
